MODERN ARCHITECTURE - WINGARDH ARKITECKT
Architecture & Interiors by: WINGARDH ARKITECKT Location: Goteborg, Sweden Specialty: single-family & multi-family residential, public, corporate Project Highlights: Villa Anne, Villa Nilsson
One of my favorite websites is sellModern which highlights modern residential properties on the market. I often refer to this website to review projects in development and learn about new feature architects. One of the feature architects whose work I have fallen in love with is that of Sweden based firm WINGARDH ARKITECKT. I am inspired by the firm's innovative concrete detailing and their ability to transform residential architecture into a seamless extension of the surrounding landscape. Villa Anne and Villa Nilsson are two perfect examples of the amazing impact that great architecture and interiors have when well designed.
"Dona Living is a wholly original new line from Valencia with refreshingly different pieces characterized by distinctive shapes, and the use of exotic woods and colourful lacquer finishes. Their trademark "Agata" Low Table in Ebony has become an instant icon, while their mythically named ottoman and low table combinations (such as "Tesa and Pairs"), have emerged as universal favorites. Most items are available in your choice of White Ash, Lati Wenge, Natural Oak, or Ebony, in combination with Red, Brown, Black, or White lacquer finishes." - available through Spencer Interiors. Modern-Contemporary furniture that is moderately priced while perfect for a kid friendly home. I love the ottomans & table compliments which are great space savers and are multi-functional for any living room or family room.

I love the floating vanity, the flush detailing of the countertops and most of all the detail of the wall returns being offset from the vanity wall which gives an illusion of the space. And of course, I love that traditional baseboards, are replaced with a crisp reveal detail. Note that even the electrical outlets are to the side mounted horizontally. The attention to detail in this space is well executed. I only wish it wasn't such a struggle to have general trades always saying that these details are impossible ... so I archive these images for times when contractors tell me a detail is impossible or too difficult to execute, it is projects like like the work of MKD that proves otherwise "see it can be done ... they were able to accomplish this beautiful detail" ... great builder on this project!
Thank you Blake for the update on the details of this amazing project. Look forward to seeing more of these beautiful interiors. I'm delighted to see the attention to detail in both the interior architecture and photography.
Feature Interior Design Firm: DIEDIER GOMEZ Location: Paris, France Specialty: high-end residential, retail, commercial, hospitality Project Highlights: See my favorites on flickr image library
I love the use of combining oversized graphics with bold colour to create a dramatic interior concept. The work of Diedier Gomez is a perfect example of well executed concept interiors.
Architecture & Interior Design by: LORCAN O'HERLIHY ARCHITECTS Locations: Los Angeles, California Specialty: high-end residential, mixed-use, institutional, commercial Project Highlights: Jai House, Gardner 1050
I am inspired by LORCAN O'HERLIHY ARCHITECTS whose residential portfolio is a perfect example of using innovative space planning to create interior spaces that are seamless with the exterior. One of my favorite projects is the Jai House for it's beautifully executed details as seen in the cantilevered stair treads and floor to ceiling glazing. Features include an open roof top patio and a covered pool which extends outwards into the landscaping, eliminating the boundaries between interior and outdoor spaces. The architecture transforms outdoor areas into functional extensions of the interior living spaces. Instead of the traditional home full of rooms, the Jai house provides open space planning for more flexibility to entertain while also giving the illusion of more space. I love the idea of watching a movie beneath the stars while comfortably lounging on the rooftop garden.

In my travels to New York, I wanted to learn more about the local design industry and become more familiar with what I consider the best of modern architecture and interiors. I am inspired by the firm's precision of detailing and their sophisticated yet subtle integration of company branding as seen in the Bathhouse project in Las Vegas and the Skinkinic previously published in Interior Design Magazine. The Kelly Hoppen signature style has transformed the art of consulting into a brand of it's own. Recently, the firm has re-launched the KH website to feature the KELLY HOPPEN HOME line with BHS. MODERN ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS - DEBORAH BERKE ARCHITECTS
Feature Interior Design Firm: DEBORAH BERKE ARCHITECTS Location: New York, New York Specialty: corporate, commercial, high-end residential Project Highlights: Marianne Boesky Gallery, Gordon Loft Residence
New York based architectural firm DEBORAH BERKE ARCHITECTS brings new insight to the modern interior. I was inspired by the minimalist architecture and light filled interiors of the MARIANNE BOESKY GALLERY. In learning more about the firm's work, I discovered the same austere yet sophisticated approach used in corporate and gallery interiors applied to their residential projects. What I love about the details of a modern interiors is the ability to create a neutral canvass that is calming to the eye and in turn highlight the personalized items that move us from artwork and furniture to sentimental collectables. I share with you the amazing designs of a firm that evokes a sense of restraint yet beautifully executed architectural details, there is something to be said for a space that moves you. I appreciate DBA's design aesthetic and sophisticated approach to architecture.
The IN&OUT floor lamp from MOVELIGHT ITALY is a beautiful light source for an interior to provide soft ambient lighting while also being a perfect statement piece for a modern interior. "Extraordinary table and floor lamps encased in hand blown transparent glass with frosted top (removable), with chromed base and stem. Shown sequentially, or paired in contrasting sizes, these lamps make a spectacular statement." Available through SPENCER INTERIORS, Vancouver. This is one of my favorites for design, light quality and for a "sexy" signature to completing an interior.
When we think modern minimalism, we don't necessarily think drapery ... however, it is the added textures of lush fabrics and the tailoring of window treatments that complete a room. I love the combination of modern interior detailing combined with the softness of lush, organic styling achieved with accessories, art and of course, the addition of stunning drapery panels. There is a subtle beauty in modern minimal architectural elements such as flush drywall details, oversized windows, polished concrete floors, recessed hidden light fixtures and frameless glass panels. Key to styling an interior is the layering of the final soft finishes that transform a space into an experience, turning a house into a personalized home. Window treatments are key elements to completing an interior; they can dramatically soften a space while providing practical functions such as protecting your furnishings from UV damage or providing additional insulation. Full height drapery panels can create drama in a space by emphasizing ceiling heights or create an ethereal feeling by filtering light into a room. Vancouver-based RAVI DESIGN is an exceptional company with which to work. Recently featured in Apartment Therapy, LA as a great source for modern window treatments through their flickr images, they are an incredibly talented team that produces craftsmanship of incomparable quality. Their attention to detail is unparalleled in the world of fabulous window coverings ... I highly recommend their work and love the opportunity to collaborate with them whenever possible.
STUDIO GAIA, based in New York, specializes in hotel and restaurant design along with high-end residential projects. They have displayed a deft skill for creating dramatic interiors with bold concepts. Carefully crafted custom furniture contributes to truly unique spaces, along with effective use of ceiling and lighting details. The W HOTEL is a great example of their ability to create a strong concept and carry it through in every detail, such as interesting space planning where they've arranged seating around a central core in their lounges. It's refreshing to see their theatrical style applied to residential interiors, as demonstrated with their New York penthouse project.
"VICCARBE collection shows the value and references for a contemporary style with a wide range of products for comfortable living. It is distinguished by great simplicity, innovative elegance and global brand awareness ... This collection is ideal for people who live in the present and think of the future" - viccarbe. Vancouver based furniture store SPENCER INTERIORS will be featuring a new line of furniture from VICCARBE. A great line of furniture for those of us who are modern minimalists. The simple clean lines and tailored detailing of each piece is a timeless addition to any room. What I love about European furniture is the accuracy and precision of proportions - combining extra deep seating with low wide arms makes for a perfect place to relax and lounge.
MODERN ARCHITECTURE AUSTRALIA - MARCH CASHMAN KOOLLOOS
where does the old stop and the new begin? MARCH CASHMAN KOOLLOOS ARCHITECTS projects are excellent examples of beautifully executed transitions between old and new architecture. Their seamless joining of the two creates unexpected & beautiful points of interest. Carefully placed new skylights flood the interior with natural light as they graze old brick walls. Vertical elements extending through to the exterior cleverly play with our perception of space while oversized frameless windows carved out of an old shingle roof play with our perception of where the indoor stops and the outdoor begins. Once again, thank you desire to inspire for sharing the work of this amazing architect.
I came across the work of MARCH CASHMAN KOOLLOOS ARCHITECTS through my friends at DESIRE TO INSPIRE. Midcentury Jo and Kim are 2 talented design enthusiasts who I've been lucky to meet through flickr and blogging. I love the work of MCK Architects for their modern-transitional design sense and their amazing ability of create seamless yet interesting home extensions as shown in many of their home renovations.
IAN MOORE ARCHITECTS is an Australian based architectural firm whose work represents an excellent example of modern minimalism. I am inspired by the firm's ability to execute a level of restraint while creating interior spaces that are both dramatic yet calm at the same time. Interior details include custom 20' high stacking, aluminum framed sliding doors to flush drywall details and walls composed of over sized aluminum louvers.
LIVABLE MINIMALISM is showcased in this loft interior by the Australian based firm, the CARR DESIGN GROUP. The beauty of minimalist interior details well executed through a combination of frameless glazing with flush drywall & millwork profiles. A colour palette of ebony lacquer and white walls softened by diffused lighting throughout. I love the layering of textured charcoal gray wools with the warmth of black walnut floors. What some may think is a masculine colour scheme - I think this project reflects a timeless interior with a lived in feel by adding the classic wishbone chairs and a beautiful collection of art. - love the volume of space ...
Livable mimalism is how I refer to the interior detailing of Australian architecture and interior design firm, the CARR DESIGN GROUP. Their portfolio ranges from high-end corporate and residential interiors to modular residential home plans. I am impressed to see their commitment to provide "affordable modernism" to average home buyers through building systems that are adaptable to both suburban and high density communities. With the increasing cost of living, construction and real estate, we are seeing the design community more involved in working towards innovative solutions for future developments.
A perfect colour scheme of crisp eggshell white combined with the subtle cool shades of gray found in natural concrete. What might seem ordinary in the black shadow accents and soft pale pinks from fallen blossoms create depth through a layering of colours. I often refer to nature for inspiration when creating a new favorite colour scheme. The beauty lies in the simplicity of translating what we see in every day context into something for a timeless interior ... it's sunny and the blossoms are out, a perfect day to take out the camera and capture the beauty of spring this easter long weekend ... have a lovely long weekend! Happy Easter to you and your loved ones! love & smiles =) gaile
During a recent sourcing visit to New York, I came across BUTTER & EGGS in Tribeca. They carry some amazing home accessories in crisp white corian solid surfacing. I did some reading to find out more about the product line and learned that the designers behind these amazing objects are a talented husband & wife team. The extensive styling/editorial background of Roseann Repetti complements the modern architectural process of her husband, architect West Chin. They formed FTF DESIGN STUDIO to produce a line of home accessories. Through the website for their architecture & interior design firm, WEST CHIN ARCHITECTS, I share with you their portfolio of amazing interiors which has evolved into a product line of home accessories, furniture & uniquely designed freestanding tubs. I admire how they have taken the opportunity to brand their work into a line of products and, even better, are using one of my favorite materials - CORIAN.
